Start from the drawdown, not the target
On a 50K account with a $3,000 target and $2,000 drawdown, you can afford far fewer bad days than good days. Plan risk first — see how trailing drawdown works if your firm uses it.
A simple framework
- Fix your per-trade risk at a small fraction of drawdown (e.g. $100–$200 on 50K). The position size calculator turns that into contracts.
- Set a personal daily stop — two or three full losses, then stop.
- Set a daily profit cap so one big day doesn't break a consistency rule.
- Trade your best setup only during the session you know best.
Respect consistency rules
Many firms require that no single day exceeds 40–55% of total profit. If you have a big day early, the effective target rises. Use our profit target and consistency calculator to recalculate, and read consistency rules explained for worked examples.
Avoid the common traps
- Trading through major news at full size.
- Holding past the firm's flat time.
- Increasing size to recover a loss.
- Ignoring how the rules change once you're funded.
